28-year-old Indonesian fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan stole the show at the New York Fashion week with the first-ever collection to feature hijabs in every outfit.
With her stunning Spring Summer ’17 collection, simply titled, D’Jakarta, the Muslim designer delighted the crowds so much that she received a standing ovation towards the end, with many chanting her name as she left the ramp walk.
“Muslims of the world and all of you, beautiful people … thank you so much for supporting me,” Hasibuan wrote on Instagram.
Models wore flowing gowns, trousers, and skirts in an array of feminine fabrics like silk, lace, and chiffon. Metallics and pastels dominated the color scheme of all the outfits including the hijabs.
The collection showcased 48 different looks out of which 10 were evening gowns while the rest were ready-to-wear pieces. “My wearers can now feel like princesses in their day-to-day lives, not just on special occasions,” she told The Jakarta Post.
One stand-out outfit was a flowy gold lace dress, featuring floral embroidery and a fringed lace train.
The designer told CNN: “I am so proud and thankful for everyone on the team who helped me so this event could happen, and I am so thankful to international and local media from Indonesia for exposing my show. I did not realize the result can be this amazing, and I am thrilled and humbled by the welcome reaction given.”
This was Anniesa’s debut fashion show in the US. Previously, Anniesa had showcased her work in the runways of London and Paris. She is also the first Indonesian designer to participate in the New York Fashion week.
Anniesa attributes her home city Jakarta as the inspiration behind this collection.
